Beginners often start at Canoes where the sandy bottom provides a relatively safe landing, while Queen’s delivers smooth rides perfect for longboarding. Advanced surfers throw cutbacks at Pops and Threes when the swells pick up during the summer months, and bodyboarders enjoy the shore break at Waikiki Walls alongside the pier at the base of Kapahulu Avenue. With its warm waters, sandy beachfront, and the iconic silhouette of Diamond Head rising in the distance, Waikiki offers a timeless surf experience for locals and visitors alike.

    Surfing (heʻe nalu in Hawaiian) is a tradition where culture, community, and the joy of riding waves come together. Maximize your surf sessions by choosing the right board. Soft tops are safe for beginners, longboards offer smooth cruising, and shortboards deliver speed for experienced surfers.

  2. Bodyboard

    Bodyboarding—also known as boogie boarding—offers wave-riding excitement for all ages and skill levels. Kids enjoy splashing in the sandy whitewash, while advanced riders showcase their style with drop knee techniques, 360 spins, and airs.

  3. Stand-Up Paddle

    Stand-up paddleboarding blends leisure with exercise. Glide gently across the water, soak in the scenery, and strengthen your core with every stroke. While SUP is excellent for fitness and relaxation, riding waves requires skill, so lessons are strongly recommended for safety.

In Waikiki, you can find a wide range of surfboard and watersport equipment rentals, from beginner-friendly soft tops to high-performance boards, SUPs, and bodyboards. Shops are located right along the beach or in hotel lobbies, making it easy to grab gear and paddle out.

While Waikiki’s shoreline is mostly sandy, some reef areas have sharp coral and wana (sea urchins). If you step on the reef, move carefully and consider wearing reef-safe footwear to protect yourself and the marine environment.

Pack light for your surf adventures. With lessons, rentals, and amenities right on the beach, you don’t need much. Keep valuables off the sand if you won’t be nearby, and embrace Waikiki’s simple, carefree spirit.
